The Vertical Extreme features a unique contest, the freerideX! It can be described in three words:

The trademarks of the freerideX are high speed and a challenging freeride track that takes riders over steep slopes, through narrow chutes, past icefalls and over big jumps down into the valley. The track is extremely demanding both physically and technically.
Both snowboarders and skiers compete in heats of eight riders each. The four fastest riders of each heat emerging from the elimination rounds advance to the next level. This process continues round after round until only the best eight remain.
